Vienna as a Meeting Metropolis

2018 MEETINGS INDUSTRY STATISTICS

In 2018 the Vienna meetings industry looks back on its best-ever results: A new record number of events is complemented by best-ever figures in all other key indicators. Never before have congresses, corporate events and incentives generated so much value-added, so many participants and so many bednights as in 2018: 631,000 conference participants (+3% over 2017) took part in a total of 4,685 congresses, corporate events and incentives (+15%) in Vienna. The number of resulting bednights increased by 3% to approximately 1,925,000. The nationwide value-added of the Vienna conference industry once again exceeded the impressive mark of one billion euros and contributed a total of 1,198 billion euros (+3%) to the Austrian gross domestic product. Eighty-two percent of the value-added was generated by international congresses, which in 2018 accounted for around half of all conference participants and more than three fourths of bednights. Across Austria, conferences, congresses and incentives in Vienna secured more than 21,500 year-round jobs. The convention sector generated taxes totaling 331.57 million euros, of which 40.44 million euros went to Vienna and 216.94 million euros to the federal government, with 74.19 million euros split between other provinces and local authorities.
